The American Society of Criminology (ASC) has just announced David Weisburd as the 2017 recipient of their prestigious August Vollmer Award.

Established in 1959, the August Vollmer Award recognizes an individual whose scholarship or professional activities have made outstanding contributions to justice or to the treatment or prevention of criminal or delinquent behavior. The award’s namesake was the first Chief of Police in Berkeley, California and a galvanizing force nationwide in professionalizing the practice of policing and developing criminal justice as an academic field in the first half of the twentieth century.

A distinguished professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society and the executive director of the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy, Weisburd was pleased to receive the news of his second culminative award from the ASC, and shared that he was “really honored to receive this award for contributions to crime prevention.” Weisburd is now part of a distinct group of scholars who have been selected for both of the ASC’s top awards. Weisburd received the Sutherland Award in 2014.

Specifically, the Vollmer Award selection committee singled out Weisburd for his accomplishments across a broad spectrum of criminal justice and criminology issues, particularly “hot-spots” policing and crime displacement. The committee also noted that [his] contributions to crime prevention theory and practice are both applied and international in scope.”

David Wilson, professor and chair of the Department of Criminology, Law and Society, congratulated Weisburd saying this “is great news. It is a prestigious award within our field. This is great recognition for David, for our department and university.”

Weisburd’s achievements will be celebrated and the award conferred at the ASC’s Annual Meeting Awards Plenary on November 15, 2017 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
