Section Information for Summer 2017
This course treats the Modern Middle East in the twentieth century by focusing on Iran, Turkey, Egypt, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Arab Spring. Major themes include colonialism, modernity, popular culture, religion, ideological currents, and political economy. The course will explore such widely-debated questions as political Islam, sectarianism, nationalism, development, identity, and gender issues. Course materials include a textbook for background reading, short primary documents for in-debt analysis, and four historical movies for discussion.
