Gallagher Appointed to Advisory Committee by Sebelius

Catherine Gallagher has accomplished a lot in her professional career. Her latest appointment may be her most important yet.

Gallagher, professor and director of graduate programs for the Department of Criminology, Law and Society, is now a member of a new advisory committee set up by Kathleen Sebelius, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. The committee will evaluate the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Gallagher's research focuses on the the intersection of health care and justice agencies to better meet the public health needs of high-risk populations. In addition to her primary research, she develops, monitors and analyzes national statistical programs and provides federal agencies with policy guidance.

According to text of the law, states are required under the Act:

  • to strengthen and improve the programs and activities carried out under this title;
  • to improve coordination of services for at risk communities; and
  • to identify and provide comprehensive services to improve outcomes for families who reside in at risk communities

“This is especially exciting because of the very specific nature of the legislation and appropriation,” she said. “This appointment is a very real opportunity.”

David Wilson, chair of the Department of Criminology, Law and Society, expressed his excitement with the appointment.

“We are excited about Dr. Gallagher’s appointment to the advisory committee for the Department of Health and Human Services,” he said. “Her work in the area of health issues among criminal justice system populations is gaining increasing recognition within the U.S. and internationally. Her selection for this committee is further evidence of her reputation in the field.”
