CLS Doctoral Student Receives Grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse

Teneshia Thurman, a doctoral student in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society, has received a three-year career building grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to continue work on an existing study that examines interventions designed to increase probation compliance.  The award supplement, titled Genderized Motivational Interventions, will allow Thurman to examine gender-related impacts of motivational interviewing and motivational computer programming formats on treatment initiation and participation, substance abuse, HIV testing/care, and recidivism, as compared to routine probation intake.  Thurman will test gender specific hypotheses about issues that affect client motivation, such as trauma, mental health disorders, a history of prostitution or domestic violence.  Ms. Thurman’s primary mentor is Dr. Faye Taxman of George Mason University.  She will also receive mentorship from Dr. Scott Walters of the University of North Texas, Dr. June Tangney of George Mason University, and Dr. Jennifer Johnson of Brown University.
