Professor Laurie Robinson, a member of the Independent Commission on NYC Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform, will discuss the Commission's report, released last spring, which calls for closing the jail facilities on Rikers Island in NYC.  The Rikers facility, which initially opened in the 1930's, is an old and miserable physical plant, and the jail is plagued by a longstanding culture of violence.  Professor Robinson will describe the Commission's recommendations for rethinking incarceration and the future of jails, and for re-imagining Rikers Island itself.

Hosted by Criminology, Law and Society Grad Student Association (CLSSA).
