The Criminal Justice Speaker Series is a vibrant component of the MS in Criminal Justice graduate program. The speaker series brings individuals working at the cutting edge of criminal justice issues to Mason. All members of the Criminology, Law and Society Department are invited to attend.

We are very excited to announce a talk by Art Wallenstein, former director of the Montgomery County (MD) Department of Correction and Rehabilitation.

Art Wallenstein has been one of the leading innovators and thinkers in corrections in the United States in the last 25 years. During his career he has headed three major local correctional systems: Montgomery County (MD), King County (WA) (Seattle), and Bucks County (PA).

He was twice appointed by Attorneys General of the United States -- Janet Reno in 1994 and Eric Holder in 2010 -- to serve as a member of the National Institute of Corrections Advisory Board and served on that body for more than 13 years.

Since retiring as head of Montgomery County's correctional system in 2015, Art has taught in several Maryland colleges and universities, served as an expert witness in selected cases and as a consultant to DOJ's Civil Rights Division, and provided technical assistance to jails around the country on behalf of the National Institute of Corrections.
