Electives
In addition to the required core coursework, students in the MS/BAM and PhD programs complete a variety of elective courses to meet their degree requirements.
Elective Courses in the MS/BAM Program
Elective courses in the MS/BAM program are offered at the 500-level and are listed on the MS degree requirements page.
Special Topics Courses: CRIM 595 courses count as electives for MS/BAM students. Students may repeat CRIM 595 as long as the topics are different, but should review the course listing in the catalog for the maximum times the course can be repeated for credit.
Elective Courses in the PhD Program
Elective courses in the PhD program can be graduate-level CRIM courses or graduate-level courses from departments across the university (with special approval).
Special Topics Courses: CRIM 795 courses count as electives for the PhD program. Students may repeat CRIM 795 as long as the topics are different and should review the course listing in the catalog for the maximum times the course can be repeated for credit.
Directed Reading Courses: CRIM 796 courses involve independent reading at doctoral level and allow students to study closely with a faculty member on a specific topic related to justice, law, or crime policy. CRIM 796 can be taken for a letter grade, or satisfactory/no credit. Students must successfully complete 12 graduate level CRIM credits before requesting enrollment in a CRIM 796 course. Students must obtain the instructors approval and submit the Directed Reading Request Form to the Director of Graduate Programs at least two weeks before the beginning of the semester to receive approval. Once approved, the Graduate Program Coordinator will create the CRIM 796 section and provide the course registration number (CRN) to the student so they can add the course via Patriot Web.
Non-CRIM Courses: Doctoral students may apply 3-6 credits of non-CRIM courses to their elective degree requirements with prior written approval of the Director of Graduate Programs. Students must receive approval from the instructor and submit the Non-CRIM Course Request Form and required documentation to the Director of Graduate Programs at least two weeks before the beginning of the semester to receive approval. Only in cases where there is a specific unmet need with clear degree benefit will a request be considered.
